Vivian Mercier was born in Clara, County Offaly, Ireland. He was educated at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen and at Trinity College Dublin, where he was a Scholar. After taking his doctorate at Trinity, he taught in American universities from the 1940s to the 1980s; his last post was Professor of English at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Vivian Mercier was one of the foremost scholars and critics of Anglo-Irish literature, particularly the work of Samuel Beckett. He also wrote on the French nouveau roman. His last
posthumous work, edited by his widow, was a major historical reappraisal of modern Irish literary history.
